Dear Mr. Tannock,
My name is Alexander Chaychits, I am a resident of London and a member of the Belarusian community in Britain.
According to a press release on the website of the European Parliament, on January 12th, the Foreign Affairs Committee, the Sub-Committee on Human Rights, the European Parliament Euronest delegation and the EP delegation to Belarus together with EP President Jerzy Buzek will hold an extraordinary meeting to discuss the situation in Belarus.
I am very closely following the situation in Belarus and the reaction of the European Union to the events in my country of origin. So do many other members of the Belarusian diaspora in Britain. I am very glad that the reaction of the EU and the United Kingdom to the outrageous vote rigging in Belarus and violence against an opposition demonstration on December 19th (especially given that some of my friends and relatives have been arrested there), has been immediate and adequate.
The response of the Free World to the actions by the regime of president Lukashenka must ultimately result in concrete measures targeting people responsible for political repressions and electoral fraud in Belarus.
For instance, a good example has been set by Poland which has made national visas free of charge for the citizens of Belarus while banning entry for persons involved in political repressions. I suggest the European Parliament to appeal to the countries of the Schengen Agreement to apply the scheme used by Poland to the whole Schengen area. The list of persons banned from entering the Schengen area should not limit itself to top officials but should include the executers of unlawful orders from the ranks of medium and lower grade state servants (e.g. responsible people among officers of police and the KGB, members of universities administrations responsible for politically motivated dismissal of students, etc), as well as their immediate family members.
The aim of measures taken by the EU should be to prevent people from getting involved in unlawful actions by the authoritarian regime that is currently in power in Belarus and which is responsible for continued human rights violations which are unacceptable for a country which is member of the OSCE and a signer of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Attached to this e-mail please find a Memorandum by the Association of Belarusians in Great Britain and statements by the Rada BNR (the Belarusian government in exile) and by Belarusian democratic groups.
Besides that I would like to invite you to a demonstration held by the Belarusian community of London together with other people concerned about democracy and human rights in Belarus. It will take place opposite the embassy of Belarus (6 Kensington Court, London W8 5DL) on Sunday, January 16, between 2pm and 3pm. We will demand immediate release of all political prisoners in Belarus and a stop of repressions against the democratic opposition.
You have made numerous statements concerning he situation in Belarus. In one of your articles you have very accurately referred to Belarus as "the missing link in Eastern Europe’s post-Soviet democratization and reintegration". Therefore I rely upon your deep understanding and awareness of the problems of this country and strongly hope that the extraordinary meeting of the European Parliament will be productive.
