on his morning letter received a prompt response from the office of Charles evrapalyamentara Tennoka:
Dear Mr Chaychits
Dr Tannock has read your email and wants you to know that he is following events closely in Belarus and is currently drafting an ECR text for an EP resolution on the conduct of the Presidential elections and the conduct of the authorities in the immediate aftermath when legitimate protests were held and many protesters were beaten and arrested which is completely unacceptable to the democratic international community. Dr Tannock is disappointed as he recentl met the Belarus Ambassadorto the UK who reassured him the elections would be free and fair and would be endorsed as such by the OSCE, which sadly they were not.
Dr Tannock will participate in the debate of the EP Foreign affairs Committee next week in the presence of the High Represenative Baroness Ashton and Mr Milinkievich and the leader of the ad hoc EP fact finding delegation to Minsk who will be reporting back to the parliament.
The ECR and other groups are considering what further measures can be taken to restore democracy and fundamental freedoms to Belarus though sadly to date both sanctions and better engagement have failed to achieve the desired results.
